How do I dress for the vintage look without looking silly?

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Become selective when opting for a current trend, think about whether it fits your personality and your lifestyle, otherwise you’ll never be completely at ease with your look and you will not be able to carry it off successfully.
The vintage trend is perfect for you as long as it is used in moderation. Mix something old with something contemporary. Never try to do vintage from head-to-toe unless you want to look like an extra in a costume drama.

Start by lightly accessorizing existing outfits with vintage- inspired pieces, eg. a diamontee brooche or a sequinned bag or necklace. For the day, opt for accessories that are vintage-inspired shapes, colours and textures but which are subtle not too bright or sparkly. For one-off pieces, try markets like Portobello, Camden, Spitalfields or Greenwich although the high street also has a good range of vintage-inpsired accessories, including Monsoon and Accessorise who currently stock beautiful replica antique jewellery.

Can you give me any hints and tips about my oily skin?

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Oily skin usually goes hand-in-hand with enlarged pores and has a tendency to break-out. Adult acne affects many of us and can knock our confidence. Take heart though, and look on oily skin as a blessing as it tends to stay wrinkle-free for longer than other skin types.

Buy skincare specifically for oily and problem skin, use a gentle cleanser with a facial brush to get the skin deep-down clean (Eve Lom’s Cleanser is excellent at balancing out the skin and comes with its own muslin cloth). Follow up with a clay mask twice a week to remove excess oil and imputrities (try Liz Earle’s Deep Cleansing Mask).

Before applying foundation, apply a silicon-based primer to prepare your skin for makeup (eg. Estee Lauder Idealist Skin Refinisher). These primers are designed to increase your foundation’s long-wearing properties, and may also prevent your foundation from discolouring.
For oily skin, you need an oil-free foundation that works with your skin, gives you a nice matte finish, good coverage, is long-wearing and doesn’t clog your pores. Foundations that fit this bill are M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid SPF15, Vincent Longo Water Canvas Cream-to-Powder, Stila Pivotal Skin, Clinique Superfit Make-up, or Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse.

You can keep your face shine-free during the day by touching up with blotting powder (Bobbi Brown’s are wonderful).

I’m flat-chested – what should I wear?

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

The great thing about being flat-chested is that many clothes will hang better on you than on buxom ladies. And you can wear padded bras and silicone enhancers to add shape and definition.

You can choose to wear a variety of exciting necklines. For evenings, high-necked halternecks are a flattering option, as they show off a sexy back and shoulders! The stylish plunging neckline dresses that are so popular right now are also good for women with smaller chests (as long as you have a smooth and flawless décolleté), as attention is drawn to the low cut of the dress. Remember to use tit-tape, so that the dress stays put, and doesn’t slip or slide.

Other flattering shapes are long-fitted sleeves with a round neck
and tops with a frill or ruffle detail as these add volume to the chest area. Layering is another way of adding bulk to your chest, with fitted tops that draw attention to your waist.

Avoid low scoop necklines and deep v-necks that cling and accentuate a bony chest.
