7 Top Tips to looking younger

October 27th, 2011

I thought it may be nice to do a regular feature on a friday with my tops tips and how women can look younger by following them and a few simple rules.

Update your basics

  • Even the basics change – not as quickly as the trends
  • Your black trousers, and skirts, jackets and coats
  • Make sure they are a classic shape but still in fashion
  • Details such as shoulder pads, and the width of the arm or leg

Wear the right colours

  • Wearing the right colours can have a dramatic effect on the way that you look
  • Right colours lift your face
  • Wrong colours drag it down and make you look older
  • Wrong colours will enhance wrinkles
  • Right colours will bring attention to glow in cheeks and eye colour

Get a good pair of jeans

  • A bootcut or straight pair in a dark indigo denim is a safe bet
  • Stick to something smarter
  • No rips
  • Not too low waisted
  • Simple style that are well fitted – shop around until you find the perfect pair – spend time – Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, Selfridges Bodymetrics range

Update your accessories

  • Makes a big difference
  • Don’t need to be changed frequently – shows you are up to date if they are – young keep up to date!
  • Adds fun to outfit which gives youthful appearance – not too much fun though – not eccentric
  • Colours
  • Tights
  • Bags
  • Jewellery
  • Scarves

Hair and skin

  • You wear your hair everyday
  • No matter how young looking and up to date your outfit, if you have an old fashioned haircut it will look dated and ageing
  • Getting older – lose moisture and elasticity
  • Skin should look glowy not dry – moisturisers, put a shimmery face primer under your foundation – Benefit, Becca, Lancome
  • Hair should look full of moisture and shiny – deep conditioners and serum

Be open to new ideas

  • Look in shops you wouldn’t normally look in – mini dress as tunic
  • Have a look in magazines to give you ideas as to how to adapt the trends – Instyle and Woman and Home
  • Look at celebrities in their everyday clothes

Find different ways to combine your clothes

  • Mix casual and smart together
  • Eg. A pair of tailored trousers with some casual street style trainers instead of a shoe
  • Different lengths can work – short over long
  • Don’t stick to exactly the same outfits all the time
  • Mix evening with day

Christmas Chic – How To Choose and Wear Party Dresses

October 24th, 2011

‘Tis the time of year to dust off your party dresses and get glammed up. If parties make you make your heart sink because you feel you’ve got nothing to wear, fear not. Here’s our guide to the best party frocks and how to wear them to turn heads.

One-shoulder Dresses

Whistles shoulderThese take attention to the shoulder area and away from the hips – “Hooray,” I hear you cry!

As this dress makes a stunning statement, you need very little to dress it up other than a fab pair of earrings.

You can even cheat by wearing something that gives the illusion of a one-shoulder dress such as this Whistles dress.

Long-sleeved Dresses

Long Sleeved Phase EightThese are great if you don’t like showing off your arms. There are lots of chiffon-sleeved dresses around.

To stop this type of dress from looking frumpy, wear it as short as you dare. I love the lighter colours teamed with black opaque tights and heels.

If it’s an unfitted style, you could try adding a pretty bow belt to give yourself a defined waist.

And if you are a little on the busty side, a long necklace will break up your top half.

Twenties style Dresses

Twenties OasisGo for a metallic dress with an art deco feel, dropped waist or fringing to give your Christmas or party outfit a 1920’s feel.

Team it with a feathered clutch, or diamante hairclips, but be careful not to go overboard – you don’t want to look like you’re in fancy dress.

The straight shapes and dropped waists of this style of dress are great if you have a straighter waist and no hips.

And the bronzes and metallics will make sure you stand out from the sea of black at your party.

Lace Dresses

Lace Topshop dressA classic alternative for your little black dress. It can look quite girly, but you can offset this if you prefer a slightly edgier look, by wearing shoe-boots and an oversized boyfriend blazer or tuxedo jacket.

Beware of shoe boots if you have very chunky ankles – try some chunky heels with hidden platforms instead.

Or stick to a ladylike version like this sexy D&G number – fantastic on an hourglass figure – just add some pointy kitten heels, and you have a beautiful Joan from “Mad Men” inspired look.

Mango jaquard dressJacquard Dresses

These may remind you of your Granny’s curtains but they are a hot trend right now. A huge benefit is that jacquard is a thick fabric which can be very flattering for “holding it all in”!

If you don’t fancy a whole dress in it, then opt for a pencil skirt and team it with a simple top and a touch of jewellery.

Draped Dresses

Draped WarehouseWear this in a strong statement colour, and let the draping and ruching do the work for you. A flattering way to distract attention from any lumps and bumps, or add curves and interest if you’re straight up and down.

If you go for a plain black dress why not add some funky leopard print shoes for a fun and sexy feel! They’ll be more versatile than you think as you can wear them with plain black trousers, and even jeans.

Jumpsuits

Reiss JumpsuitThe jumpsuit has a gorgeously 70’s feel about it and can look fabulously elegant, tailored and dressy while making a change from the usual black dress.

Wear it in simple black and accessorise with metallic shoes and bangles.

The Seven Most Stylish Summer Trousers – And How To Wear Them

June 20th, 2011

If you feel confused or overwhelmed by the choice of trouser styles around for summer, fear not. We’ve put together a fool-proof guide to choosing the best styles for your bodyshape and how to wear them with confidence and oomph!

1. Cargo Pants

This style is great for top-heavy figures who have great legs and slim hips. Team with flat sandals for a wearable and comfortable alternative to jeans, or heeled gladiator sandals for a cool evening look.

The skinniness of the trousers requires a top with some volume to balance them out. And offset the masculinity of them with some pretty jewellery, and a funky cross-shoulder bag.

Here are our Top 10 Tips on how to layer with style:

1. If you’re going to layer with a vest top, don’t stick to just black and white. Luckily, vests and camisoles are available in a huge variety of colours at all different price points. Use them to add a pop of colour to your outfit – they’re a brilliant way to try out new colours. Just make sure they’re in flattering colours that suit your skintone and hair and eye colour.

If you’re going to be shedding layers, make sure the straps of your vest are wide enough so that you don’t feel self conscious.

And think about the bra you’re wearing with your outfit. It’s fine to have the straps on show if they’re a lovely colour or a pretty print, but keep frayed or grey straps out of sight!

If you’re wearing a higher neck top, try layering that with a bright or contrasting colour peeking out underneath the bottom of your top – it adds a nice point of interest. This can create the illusion of a low slung belt. It’s also a useful way of adding length to tops that you feel are too short for you.

How To Buy The Perfect Outfit For That Special Occasion

June 16th, 2010

Summertime’s arrived (so the clocks say), and the invites have started dropping on the doormat. It could be a wedding, a day at the races, a landmark birthday, an evening at the opera, a graduation ceremony, or perhaps another important family event.

These are, of course, all wonderful occasions that you’re looking forward to attending, but do you have that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach and a feeling of dread that just won’t go away? “What on earth am I going to wear!?”

The first thing to do is to check the dress code for the event to get an idea of what is expected and what other people will be wearing. You may not have the perfect outfit hanging in your wardrobe ready to be whisked out and accessorised, so you may need to start thinking about a shopping trip. Don’t leave it until the last minute, you’ll only put yourself under more pressure, and end up panic buying.

Take a deep breath, have a think about the sort of oufit you’d like to see youself wearing, and collect some pictures from magazines that appeal to you.

The outfit you choose should be more fun than your work wear, smarter than your weekend wear, and more grown up than your going out gear – all this without losing sight of your personality or turning into a dreaded frump!

The other thing you might want to consider is this. Buy an outfit and accessories that become investment buys ie. those you absolutely adore because you love how good you look in them, but also can wear in different ways with different pieces on different occasions so you know you’ve spent your money wisely.

Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention, the outfit should fit you perfectly, be the perfect style for your bodyshape and the perfect colour that make you look radiant and glowing.

Feeling stumped? Then read on for our take on How To Nail That Outfit For That Special Occasion (Part 1):

Choosing & Buying Your Perfect Wedding Outfit

April 30th, 2010

Shape:
Your wedding dress is one of the most important pieces of clothing you’ll ever buy. And I bet you’ll want it to be the most flattering thing you’ve ever worn.

So think about your bodyshape to work out what’ll suit you. Are you straight up and down and would you like to add some curves? Are you pear shaped and want to balance out your hips? Or are you top heavy with a slim bottom and legs?

Even if you are thinking of having your dress made especially for you, book some appointments to try on some gowns. This will help to give you a good idea of the shapes that you like and dislike, and which flatter your figure the best.

If you’d like some one-to-one professional advice with a Personal Stylist to find the most fabulous wedding outfit, pick up the phone and call us on 0845 0454 0858, or email us at info@theglassslipper.co.uk.
