Revealed: The Secrets Of Successful Corporate Dressing

Q. What’s one easy way to impress your boss?

A. Look the part. What you wear really does reflect who you are.

It’s more important than ever to look the part at work. It’s so easy to get it right, but also so easy to get it wrong. What should you wear to work? How do you need to dress to look the part for the job you want to be doing?

Don’t let lack of action hold you back. Below are some easy-to-action grooming guidlelines by one of our top London-based stylists (who really knows what she’s talking about), that could really make a difference to how you’re seen at work.

Dress for the job you want and not the job you have, and make the way you look play a part in determining how far you will go.

Simply follow our easy-to-implement Top Tips To Looking Stylish At Work…

  • The smart work suit: for designer suits, try to shop in the sales when prices are dramatically slashed. Head to the major department stores on the first day of the sales to snap up suits and shirts in neutral classic colours and cuts – these will last you a lifetime.
  • If you can’t wait for the sales, then try Zara or Reiss for a mid-priced take on a designer style. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for a rummage, find the nearest TK Maxx to you where you could buy a designer suit for a fraction of the retail cost.
  • Try to buy lots of mix and match pieces. For a tailored look, look for a skirt and trousers that can go with your jacket so you’ll get twice as many outfits out of it.
  • Buy a mix of simple tops in a range of seasonal colours and styles. These will instantly update your outfits. Look for colorful shirts and tops with a fashionable twist in stores like Zara, Jigsaw, and Gap.
  • A classic coat will see you through many seasons. A single-breasted mac style will fit easily over your business wear and create a neat and elegant look.
  • Accessories are the best way to update an outfit and show off your personality. Try teaming some dark metallic shoes with black trousers, or wearing a coloured silk scarf over a basic top.
  • If you want to create a great silhouette, wear a coloured or patent belt over your jacket. This will nip in your waist, and also add a personal touch to your outfit.
  • When shopping for skirts and jackets, opt for a classic style with a fashionable twist. A knee-length pencil skirt with a high waist, or a bracelet-sleeve jacket are both super-stylish and smart.
  • Colour is a great way to add a dash of individuality to a plain outfit, so consider adding a brightly coloured shirt or jacket to some plainer bottoms.

Wear it Well

  • Think about your outfit before you put it on. Rather than rushing out in the morning wearing the first thing you grabbed from your wardrobe, lay it out the night before – you’ll look much more put together!
  • Make sure that your clothes fit you well – if you have to work in them all day, they need to be comfortable and easy to wear. Shoes that pinch and trousers that barely button up are a no-no.
  • Always hang your clothes up. Use wooden hangers rather than wire ones if possible, as they help to keep clothes in great shape.
  • In winter, wear 40 or 60 denier opaque tights containing lycra. Opaque tights are less likely to snag and, more importantly, make legs look lean and slim.
  • In summer, 10 denier tights are better than bare legs, and some give the appearance of natural colour.
  • There’s nothing worse that a jacket or jumper that’s covered in fluff! To remove fluff and hair, invest in a clothes brush, or use a clean marigold glove, or wrap sellotape around your hand.
  • Iron all clothes inside out to avoid them looking shiny.
