|
Being a mother can be the best thing in the world, but it can take its toll on how you look. When your children are your main focus, it’s easy to take your eye off your appearance, and before you know it, you’re wearing a uniform of tracky bottoms, jeans and a t-shirt in drab colours, and your confidence has plummeted.
Looking after young children doesn’t mean that you have to abandon fashion in favor of function. You can have the best of both worlds. Read on for our easy-to-follow Top Tips to get you from Slummy Mummy to Yummy Mummy in no time!
Think about your new lifestyle – what you do, what you feel comfortable in and, most importantly, what you want to look like! Use that as your starting point for your new look.
- Edit Your Wardrobe. Go through your entire wardrobe and get rid of anything old, faded or bobbly – nothing makes you feel worse than wearing worn clothes. Next, get rid of all those pregnancy clothes you’ve been living in for the past nine months – your body and lifestyle will have changed now and so must your wardrobe.
- Make A List. Sit down and make a note of anything you want to add to your your wardrobe – do you need new jeans? Some decent underwear? Or a special going out outfit?
- Buy The Basics. This is the cheapest way to update your wardrobe. A set of well fitting t-shirts and vests in the new season’s colours will give you an instant fashion update and a great base for layering and mixing and matching your clothes. Chances are, you may be carrying some extra weight around your tummy area, so make sure that your basics have a longer body to disguise any bumps.
- Buy A Pair Of Jeans. Never underestimate the power of well-fitting jeans! Your body and lifestyle will have changed and so should your jeans. Try on lots of pairs until your find the best fit, and when you do find the perfect fit, buy them in several colours. A dark indigo pair for smarter looks, a black pair for everyday wear, and a lighter pair for a more casual look. If you’re going to be wearing them almost daily, you need to have a good variety to stop you getting bored.
- Jeans Alternatives. Leggings layered under knitted tunics and dresses are cheap, comfy and easy to wear, and are a great casual alternative to jeans. As it gets warmer, consider buying a denim skirt or some Bermuda shorts which are still easy to wear, and will add more variety to your wardrobe.
- A Comfy Cardigan. A great cardigan or sweater coat can instantly dress up even the most basic jeans and t-shirt outfit.
- Dressier Tops. It’s a huge confidence booster to have some well-loved pieces hanging in your wardrobe that make you look fabulous. Look for some slightly dressier tops and shirts that you can pair up with your jeans – great for smart/casual occasions and lunch with the girls.
- A Shower-Proof Jacket. A lightweight, shower-proof jacket that can be folded up into your bag will be indispensable when taking the kids to the park. Look for a slim-fitting style with some design features rather than a functional, baggy, sporty one.
