Autumn 2007 Newsletter
It seems like only yesterday when we were snapping up our pretty floral maxi dresses and mini city shorts. But summer is nearly over, the sales stock is disappearing and the stores are slowly filling up with gorgeous Autumn/Winter clothes and accessories.
Don’t know where to start? Then let The Glass Slipper guide you to the best of this season’s fashion must haves!
Major Trends
Luxe
This season is all about sophisticated items with luxury touches. Expect to see crystal gems embellished onto sweaters, feathers on scarves, dresses drenched in sequins and butter soft leathers. Keep silhouettes simple and let the embellishments do all of the talking. Sequined tunic dresses layered over jeans or opaque tights will be a hot look for the party season, but for the less brave amongst you, try using opulent accessories such as a beaded clutch bag or some sparkly shoes to perk up a plainer outfit.
New Proportions
Wave goodbye to shapeless shifts, say hello to curves! You can all breathe a sigh of relief as the tunic is finally on the way out. The newest shapes celebrate the female form with boxy shouldered coats, cropped sleeve jackets, cinched in waists and cocooned shaped skirts and outerwear. Trousers have wide tailored legs and blouses play up the feminine form with puffed sleeves, frills and bows.
Dominatrix
Leather trousers, black jeans, thigh-high boots, biker jackets and fitted corsets dresses may sound scary but, if worn correctly, they are one of the sexiest and sophisticated looks of the season. The trick is to take an element of the trend and team it with more simple items. Wear your corset dress with thick black tights for a less obvious look, or your biker jacket with a lurex vest and skinny jeans to make heads turn.
Fantastic Forties
Long silky gowns, floor-length sequined dresses, and forties inspired silhouettes all hark back to the vintage goddesses of the silver screen. Nipped in waists, midi hemlines and puffed sleeves are all major styling details. Wear with glossy forties-style curls and a slick of red lipstick for a feminine and glamorous look. Forties styles are particularly good for curvy girls as nipped in waists create hourglass figures and emphasize busts while slimming down hips.
Shine
The battle for metallic supremacy continues throughout the winter with tons of gold and silver in the stores. However, there will be a crop of new metals making an appearance as burnished coppers and gleaming pewters are found on everything from coats to shoes. Even black gets a metallic makeover with shiny jeans and black gem embellishments giving clothes a fresh and futuristic feel. This is a trend that can be worn by everyone, but for best results keep it simple with only one or two pieces of metallic wear in an outfit.
Military
This timeless trend returned to the catwalks with a classic naval twist: think epaulettes, medals and brassy buttons rather than camouflage and cargo pants. This is a great trend for outerwear so look out for naval pea coats with luxe braiding, chunky knit double-breasted cardigans and woollen shorts teamed with knee-high biker boots.
Soft and Gentle
Huge chunky knits that wrap the body in a soft woolly hug are set to be a huge trend this season. Jumper dresses come in loose knit waffles, extra long scarves in chunky cables and basic knits will have ruffled cuffs and puffed sleeves. This look is all about comfort and warmth and is perfect for layering up over your flimsy forties dresses. However, chunky knits can add bulk to your frame so be sure to keep layers underneath slim and fitted to create a sleeker silhouette.
Hot Colours
It’s rare to see designers being so bold with colour during the winter months, but this season the colour palette has been turned on its head and stores will be swimming with a rainbow of colours from orange to purple.
Black is still the hottest shade this season. The trendiest way to wear it is black on black, so dress head to toe in it, but give outfits a dramatic twist by wearing black beads and sequins.
Purple Shades from violet to berry were some of the most vibrant looks on the catwalks and the high street will be hot on their heels with this colour. Paler skins should look for warm shades with undertones of red, while darker skins can carry off deep, vibrant shades.
Lipstick Red Bright primary red will inject some fun and life into your winter wardrobe. Great for both dark and pale skins, although if you’re a blonde or a red head, you should steer clear of anything that’s too orangey.
Primary Yellow One of summer’s hottest colours will continue to make waves for A/W ‘07. This is a tough shade for pale skins to carry off. Look for warmer shades with mustard tones so that your skin doesn’t look washed out.
Green Khakis will play an important role in the military trend but there will also be lots of bright greens in the stores with deep emeralds being the freshest tone.
Orange Mouth-watering shades of deep orange will bring a touch of sunshine to your winter wardrobe – perfect for darker skins and brunettes.
Grey provides a softer alternative to this season’s black. Heather grays and soft marls will look great mixed with the winter brights and will give outfits a more sophisticated and understated look.
So, that’s the trends sorted out but what about the key items? Want to know what your wardrobe simply cannot do without this season? Then let The Glass Slipper guide you through our Top Ten Must Buys!
- The Midi Skirt Minis are out and maxis are dead. The only skirt length to be seen in this season is the midi. Look for sexy tailored styles with slightly fanned out hemlines and wear them with the highest heels you can manage!
- The Chunky Knit Cardigan Perfect for layering up over pretty dresses and blouses. Look for a chunky, belted style that can double up as a winter coat.
- The Military Coat For a lighter, autumnal garment, try a trench coat with metal buttons and epaulettes. For winter, a naval-inspired pea coat with brass buttons and elegant braiding will be a classic investment to see you through the cold months.
- The Shift Dress The shift dress is updated into a straight-cut, thigh-length silhouette with a crew neck, T-shirt-length sleeves and minimal detailing. Expect to see dominatrix styles in leather and super luxe shapes in bright heavy silks and with black gem embellishment.
- The Forties Day Dress A super sexy and ultra feminine shape with flirty, frilly sleeves and a knee length hemline. A cinched-in belted waist creates a gorgeous hour glass figure that’s perfect for curvy girls. Look out for heavy crepe dresses in bold chinois prints.
- The Wide Leg Pant Whether tailored or casual, the wide leg pant finally seems to be making an indent into the skinny leg market. Emerging from the forties’ trend, it is best worn with tailored jackets and feminine blouses.
- The Shiny Jeans Shine is one of this season’s big trends and denim is fast to catch on. Look for skinny or straight-legged black jeans that feature a touch of shimmer or a dash of sparkle.
- The Bow-Tie Blouse The sexy secretary look is back with feminine shirts featuring billowing sleeves and bow-tying necks. Printed chiffons and brightly coloured satins and silks are hot fabrics in this trend. Team with a waistcoat for a rock chick look, or layer over masculine trousers for a sexy androgynous look.
- The Clutch Bag is only bag shape to be seen with this season. For daytime, look for a patent leather clutch in a bold primary colour, but for night max up the glam factor with a highly embellished bag swimming in sequins or gems.
- Booties Taking over from last winter’s shooboot, this season it’s all about the bootie. Ankle-high boots feature thicker stacked heels and platform soles for a wearable, yet feminine look. Don’t just reserve these for your trousers, wear them with your skirts and dresses too.
