If you’re desperate to climb out of your winter layers, read on for the Key Trends for Spring/Summer ’09.

Shiny Happy People

Shine is high this season with glossy, shimmering fabrics dominating the catwalks. Lurex leggings, liquid silks and bright brocades are key, so look out for shiny, sophisticated shirts and full-bodied silk skirts. If shiny fabrics are a step too far for you, limit the look to accessories with brocade belts, bags and wet-look jewellery.

Cutout And Keep

Be prepared to show a flash of flesh as designers play peek-a-boo with fashion. Cut outs are key so expect keyhole blouses, cut-out patterns in fabrics, and sheer etchings on evening dresses. This is a return to subtle sexiness and the look comes into its own with occasion wear.

Fringe Benefits

Whether you favour the flapper look or cowgirl chic, be prepared to embrace fringing this season. Designers have added a fringe to just about everything from leather jackets to jeans and shoes. The easiest way to wear the look is with a fringed scarf – a cheap and easy way to make even the plainest outfit instantly on trend.

Flirty Girl

Floral skirts with swishy hem lines, cutesy dresses in peachy sorbets, and strappy sandals with impossibly high heels all get a look in with this season’s ultra feminine Flirty Look.Make sure you look for fabrics with movements – chiffons, silks and crepes are the ideal fabrics as they promote lightness and movement. Avoid stiff and structured fabrics, this look is intended to slip over your curves and move with your body! If the Flirty Look is all too girlie for you, think about adding a bow or a frill to your outfit to give your look a softer edge.

Exaggeration

Power dressing is back – channel your inner Alexis Carrington with oversized shoulder pads in fitted blazers, one-shouldered dresses and tops, and baggy harem pants. This is not a trend for the faint-hearted and must be worn with one key accessory – bags of confidence!

Tribal Gathering

Expect African-inspired prints and patterns to start dominating the high street come summertime. However, for spring, Tribal gets a luxury upgrade with shimmering prints, luxury fabrics and sequin embellishments. The look is less boho and more minimalist with simple shift dresses, bandeau dresses and button-less jackets. Team with oversized natural wooden accessories mixed with dulled gold, feathers and beads.

Sports Illustrated

Think urban sports as opposed to athletics. Techno fabrics are mixed with jerseys and draped and folded to create soft, Grecian-style origami looks. Jumpsuits, leggings and ‘80’s influenced denim jackets are key, as are ripped or distressed boyfriend jeans.

Colour Blocking

Colour is one of the biggest trends this season and the more you wear the better. Bold hues should be worn together for greatest impact or think about teaming a bright colour with a muted nude.Oranges and pinks, limes and teals, purples and greens – be as bold as you dare but remember to mix blocks of solid colours – patterns are a strict no-no!
