Christmas Styling Tips 2007
Christmas is only weeks away, so if you want to shimmer at the office party and look sensationally stylish throughout the Christmas season, read on for our top Christmas styling tips…
For the Ladies:
It’s easy to make a big impact this winter as the shops are all about shimmer and shine. Oversized sequins, luxurious satins and bold gem colours are major trends on the high street and give dull winter wardrobes a dazzling dose of Christmas cheer.
- All-over sequined tunic dresses are a huge trend this Christmas. Marks and Spencer have a fabulous designer-look version in one of this seasons hottest colours - midnight blue. This can be worn with heavy opaque tights for a high fashion look or alternatively you can layer it over a pair of smart black trousers or tight skinny jeans for a more subtle look.
- If all over sequins are too much for you, then look for something in a simpler style. The stores are full of sequin-embellished cardigans, vests and camisoles that feature a smattering of sparkles for a toned down look.
- If sequins aren’t your thing but you still want to sparkle, invest in a lurex knit. Top Shop have gone all out on this trend with cardigans, jumpers and dresses in hot metallic hues. This season metallic black is a big trend but you’ll also find lots of bronze, pewter and silver too.
- Be careful not to overdo this look – too much sparkle can over dazzle and leave you looking like a Christmas decoration! Team metallics and sequins with a plain, simple black base – thick tights, slim tailored trousers or black jeans.
- Gem colours are huge this year so expect to see party dresses and silky blouses in rich, decadent hues. Look out for emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, gold and amethyst.
- If you’re pale skinned with light or blond hair then go for ruby reds and golds to warm your skin tone and add colour.
- Redheads should look for emerald greens to off set hair and skin beautifully.
- Pale-skinned brunettes can opt for sapphire blues and rich shades of purple
- Those with olive or black skins are lucky to be able to carry off any of the winter brights.
- Cashmere is the ultimate in luxury knitwear and can give even the cheapest outfit an expensive look. Buy into the big colour trend with a cashmere jumper from Uniqlo who have a variety of affordable knitwear styles in 20 bold colours.
- If you don’t want to wear a big splash of colour but still want to warm up your winter wardrobe with a pop of something bright, simply add coloured accessories. Accessorize have a great range of embellished satin and velvet clutch and evening bags that will add instant glamour to a plain black outfit. If jewellery’s your thing then go for something big and bright – this Christmas it’s all about bold gems and statement pieces. Look for chunky necklaces with oversized stones and big cuff bracelets with coloured rocks!
- Black on black is one of the biggest and most stylish trends this Christmas. Layer black clothes with black accessories for a ‘straight off the catwalk’ look. Layer up with different textures and fabrics to ensure that this trend doesn’t look flat. Shiny satins and patent leather accessories will help to lift black outfits and give them an ultra sophisticated look.
- An alternative to glitz and glamour is power dressing as satin tuxedo suits, metallic waistcoats and one shouldered mini dresses bring an ‘80’s vibe to the festive season. Look for fitted, shrunken blazers and slim or skinny-leg trousers, and tight-fitting black denim waistcoats with a silver sheen.
- If you’re thinking about an outfit for the office party then start planning now. If it’s just afternoon drinks with your colleagues and boss then take some fun accessories into work with you to dress up your work outfit. A patent belt and some funky jewellery can jazz up even the most basic of suits. If it’s more of a glamorous event, plan ahead as last-minute buys can end up as expensive mistakes. Avoid the main high street shops and search out individual looks in smaller boutiques – that way you can avoid the horror of turning up in the same dress as the boss’s wife!
For the Guys:
This Christmas it’s all about texture and colour for men. It’s not just the ladies who get to sparkle as metallics are a hot winter trend for men too!
- The hottest party look for men this Christmas is the fitted tuxedo. Satin look slim-leg trousers have a sophisticated rock star edge and should be teamed with a slim-fitting tuxedo jacket for a modern take on the black tie look. Topman have a great Dior-inspired version while River Island and Burtons both stock fitted blazers.
- Midnight blue is the colour for shirts and jackets. Zara have luxurious satin-feel fitted shirts in this seductive shade of blue/black that can be teamed with indigo or black jeans for a casual look with a smart edge.
- For the ultimate in luxury, invest in a velvet blazer in one of this season’s boldest colours: purple, blue or black. Team with a fitted black shirt and tailored black trousers or smart jeans for a sophisticated and stylish look.
- If you don’t want to wear a jacket then get yourself a waistcoat. Layer tailored styles over a slim-fitting shirt, or wear cotton and denim waistcoats over cool rock t-shirts.
- Coloured Shirts are a great way to liven up an outfit.
- If you are blonde and fair skinned, choose something in a deep claret red or warm chocolate brown.
- Brunettes should opt for bright blues and purples
- Those with olive or black skins should go for one of the ultra bright bold colours on the high street.
- For a really coordinated look, team with a satin tie in the same shade.
- Cashmere is the ultimate in luxury knitwear and can give even the cheapest outfit an expensive look. Buy into the big colour trend with a cashmere jumper form Uniqlo who are offering a range of affordable knitwear styles in 20 bold colours.
- If you want to jazz up an outfit then concentrate on accessories. Metallics are huge for men this season and a pair of smart silver shoes or a gold coloured tie can turn even the dullest suit into a festive treat. Just remember to keep them to a minimum – one metallic item per outfit!
- Avoid novelty Christmas ties and Rudolph socks at all costs! As fun as these may seem they won’t win you any style points…
Have a great and stylish Christmas,
