Summer Trousers – And How To Wear Them

June 20th, 2011

If you feel confused or overwhelmed by the choice of trouser styles around for summer, fear not. We’ve put together a fool-proof guide to choosing the best styles for your bodyshape and how to wear them with confidence and oomph!

1. Cargo Pants

This style is great for top-heavy figures who have great legs and slim hips. Team with flat sandals for a wearable and comfortable alternative to jeans, or heeled gladiator sandals for a cool evening look.

The skinniness of the trousers requires a top with some volume to balance them out. And offset the masculinity of them with some pretty jewellery, and a funky cross-shoulder bag.

2. Slim Capri Pants

Slightly cropped and slimly tailored, these look smart and professional when worn with heels and a silk blouse.

For a slightly more dressed down look, replace the heels with ballet pumps, and the blouse for a silk shell top, and you have a cute style reminiscent of Jean Seberg in “A Bout de Souffle”.

Whistles

3. Pleat-front Crop Trousers

This style trouser is surprisingly flattering and can be worn for work or play. Styled here with some canvas brogues in a neutral colour (which make your legs look longer) and a classic striped Breton t-shirt, it gives an understated and chic casual look.

Swap the t-shirt for a crisp white shirt and the brogues for some court shoes with a cone heel, throw on a trench and you have a smart and modern look for work.

4. Coloured Chinos

Beautifully bright for summer, you can either wear these with neutrals to tone them down, or embrace the current colour blocking trend and wear them with a bright t-shirt, and clashing coloured shoes.

Plimsolls would work well with these too, so they can be worn as a great every day alternative to blue jeans!

5. Wide, Floral Trousers

These are a great summer look and more wearable than you may think. Ideal for curvy shapes, the wide leg is flattering and comfortable.

Team with a simple vest top, some gorgeous flat sandals and a little shrug or denim jacket.

If maxi dresses are not your thing, these trousers are a perfect alternative and will look great for Sunday brunch, summer barbeques, or flopping around on holiday.

6. High-waisted Flares

High-waisted trousers are fabulously leg lengthening, especially when worn with a wedge heel or platform!

If you did the 70’s the first time round, you may not want to revisit them, but instead go for a sophisticated look by wearing your flares with an elegant tie front blouse.

Take care with this look if you are petite, and choose smaller kick flares that will be more in keeping with your frame.

7. Classic Linen Trousers

You can’t go wrong with classic linen trousers for summer. The only thing you will need to decide is if you’re wearing them with flats or heels.

Add a flash of colour with wedge heels to keep it modern and fresh looking.

This is an ideal trouser for pear shapes, especially when teamed with a patterned top, which will bring the eye upwards.

If you have slim legs and hips, look for a pair that are slightly straighter, rather than very wide.
